Education does matter

From the 10 government priorities, twelve outcome areas were derived and one of the outcomes is outcome 5 which focuses on a skilled and capable workforce to support an inclusive growth path. In light of this Stats SA looked at education as a proxy for measuring skills in the country and focused on the educational attainment of the employed and unemployed. There results a very telling picture.

Different visions, missed targets

Each and every institution has a vision and to evaluate whether this vision is attained we always take a look at how targets are met. When targets are not met, we focus on all other things except the very objects of vision. Physiologically, the objects of vision are the eyes. They are two and yet we never experience a double vision. Eyes move together, see objects together, weep together, cry together and sleep together. This unique characteristic shared by both eyes, aided by the muscles holding them, gives us a clear stereoscopic and binocular vision as humans. Tension only comes if eyes are forced to look at each other.

The national teachers’ strike has been a major blow to public education, and has had a particularly devastating effect on the education of poor, rural and black children. I am pleased that the industrial action is now probably behind us and that we can begin the process of stabilizing our schools. The Council of Education Ministers and I have considered a range of options, including the extension of the school day, classes on weekends and how best to use the September school holidays, to make up for the lost schooling time.

What most determines a child’s success in the classroom is not their background, their financial circumstances, the curriculum or the resources of the school (although these things all play a role). The crucial variable is the quality of the teaching.

I do know how to spell and my grammar is about as good as any 24 year old, technically-savvy, sms generation man. I matriculated at SACS High School in 2004 after spending both my junior and high school careers at the oldest school in South Africa.
