I am sitting in a sparsely-furnished office at a local township school, engaged in a conversation with the Head of Department for the Humanities, to join me for a scheduled “one-on-one”. My eyes dart around. Files and books and papers here, flip charts and pictures there. Okay, no surprises here. Except the famed picture on the wall depicting Mbuyisa Makhubu carrying the dying Hector Peterson, with the crying Antoinette Sithole alongside him.
Anglo American drives excellence in maths education in South Africa
Ten top achieving maths and science public schools in South Africa have been recognised and each awarded R150 000 in the annual Anglo American Maths and Science Excellence Awards at a function at the Department of Basic Education. These schools were selected from 200 identified by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) as having especially strong 2009 maths and science results, with a 60% pass rate for mathematics needed at a minimum.
